How to Print Passport Photos at Home for ~$0.35
A drugstore self-service kiosk prints a 4×6in sheet for about $0.35 — and one sheet holds exactly 4 US passport photos. Here is the trick most people get wrong.
The 4×5.7in secret
A “4×6in” print is not fully usable. Kiosks crop roughly 5% from the long edge, leaving about 4×5.7in of safe area. Two 2×2in photos fit across (4in), and 5.7in of height fits exactly two rows — so the sheet takes exactly 4 photos, not six. Anyone promising “6 photos on one sheet” is printing into the cropped zone, and the edge photos get cut off.
Step by step
- Get the 4×6in print-sheet file from the maker (included with the $5.99 pack).
- Go to a CVS, Walmart, Walgreens or Costco self-service kiosk; choose a 4×6in print.
- Select “print at actual size” and turn off “fit to page” / auto-crop.
- Print, then cut along the guides with a trimmer or scissors and a steady hand.
- Measure one photo: it must be 50.8×50.8mm (2×2in). If it is not, the kiosk scaled it — reprint at actual size.
Why not print at home on photo paper?
You can — but home printers often scale silently, ink is expensive, and gloss mismatch with professional prints is a known (rare) rejection reason. The kiosk route costs about $0.35 and is what most acceptance reports describe.
Check before you submit
Even a perfectly printed sheet can be ruined by cutting 1mm too tight. Measure the final photo, not the file.
